We all wish there was more summer fun to be had, but the start of the school year is a great time to set goals… Why not make one of them: get to school safely? “Back to school” not only signifies binders, calculators and collective groans from teens everywhere, but it also marks the start of a very busy 10-month long commute. Whether you’re walking, skateboarding, bussing or driving make sure you’re doing it safely. Here are a few tips to make your back to school travel as smooth as possible.
Walking
- Pedestrians may have the right of way, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep an eye out for drivers. Be aware of your surroundings instead of looking down at your phone.
- Crosswalks are there to be a safe spot for people to cross, so make use of them, but be sure you don’t cross unless you are sure drivers have noticed you, and they have come to a complete stop.
- Having headphones in and blasting music can block out important traffic noise you need to hear when near the road – keep one earbud out of your ear so you can be alert to your surroundings.
Biking
- Rush hour drivers can be the most dangerous people on the road, and so can cyclists who don’t obey the rules. Make sure you know the road rules for biking.
- If you are on a sidewalk, remember you are a pedestrian at crosswalks! Walk your bike across the street and marked corners.
- Don’t wear noise cancelling headphones – you will need to hear the traffic sounds.
Driving
- Obey the school speed limits. If you’re worried about going slow and being late, just leave a little earlier in the mornings.
- Keep an eye out for little ones. Younger children are harder to see and sometimes unpredictable when crossing the street.
- Eliminate all distractions. Put your backpack (including your phone and headphones) in the trunk, put your makeup away, and eat that breakfast sandwich when you get to school!
- Be extra cautious in and around school zones and parking lots. Some of your peers may not be as safety-conscious as you.
Being a Passenger
- Being a safe passenger is just as important as being a safe driver. If your buddy is giving you a ride or you’re taking the bus, be respectful of the driver’s safety, and your own. Buckle up, be quiet and sit forward.
