Background Information – Professional Development in Health and Safety

Background

This ProD was developed by the Job Safety Skills Society (JSSS) to guide, encourage and support teachers in infusing safety as an integral component of their curriculum and instruction…especially in the Career and Technology Studies (CTS) program.

Together with the JSSS’s Job Safe Ambassadors, Job Safe Educator Inservices, and the MONTIE health and safety video library, the ProD provides CTS teachers with online, modular guides to support their integration of health and safety (H&S) in each Career and Technology Studies (CTS) course and in many other programs and courses.

Note: All Alberta junior and senior high school teachers can access MONTIE “Safety” videos via LearnAlberta.

While the content of the ProD is designed to align with selected Alberta Education CTS occupational clusters, the concepts and key messages depicted in the modules can be used in any classroom, lab or workshop setting.

The ongoing focus of the JSSS is to provide support and encouragement for health and safety education to students within junior and senior high schools.

The ProD

The ProD provides teachers with consistent key messages about safety means in a variety of CTS occupational clusters by providing visual examples of safe practices and processes in selected CTS occupation courses. In these contexts, the ProD is comprised of the following 10 modules:

  1. Introduction to Safety Fundamentals (Safety Principles in CTS)
  2. Communication Technology (MDC)
  3. Computing Science (BIT)
  4. Construction (TMT)
  5. Cosmetology (HRH)
  6. Fabrication (TMT)
  7. Fashion Studies (MDC)
  8. Foods (HRH)
  9. Mechanics (TMT)
  10. Natural Resources (NAT)

When selecting to access the ProD, teachers will be required to first complete Module 1: Introduction to Safely Fundamentals and then select one or more other modules that match the CTS courses or any other courses they are teaching. The key messages that are the foundation of the ProD modules, as indicated below, can be applied in multiple contexts and in both core and complementary courses.

The ProD Content

The ProD model below was developed by DETAC Corp. and given generously to the JSSS with permission to use it as the foundation of the ProD. Each of the 10 modules uses this model to communicate the four key ProD messages:

  1. Maintain a Safe Work Area
  2. Create a Safe Work Plan
  3. Keep it Safe While Working
  4. Leave it Safe for the Next People

JobSafe Ambassadors

The JSSS provides a group of qualified health and safety professionals who are willing to volunteer their expertise and experience with teachers and students through guest speaking engagements. Teachers can access the list of JobSafe Ambassadors on the JSSS website at www.jobsafetyskills.com.

The Montie

A SafetyCare video library of some 90+ videos that is available to teachers via the Learn Alberta website. For the past 8 years, the JSSS has purchased a provincial license for this video library and by donating the license to Alberta Education has made major selections of these videos available at any time to any and all Alberta teachers to enhance both their own and their students’ understanding about what it means to be safe in a variety of workplaces and contexts.
